Infinitive or gerund

  • Éviter le piège de to préposition (look forward to, be used to)

« I enjoy to read. I want studying law. I am interested in help people. I look forward to hear from you. »

On dit I enjoy reading, I want to study, I am interested in helping, et I look forward to hearing from you. »

Certains verbes regardent vers l'avenir, vers un but : ils prennent to.

  • l'infinitif complet : to + base : *I want to study.*
  • l'infinitif sans to (la base verbale) : *You must study. They made me study.*

2. Les emplois du gérondif (V-ing)

Le gérondif fonctionne comme un nom. On l'emploie :

  1. comme sujet de la phrase : *Swimming in the Niger is dangerous in the rainy season. Reading helps you to learn.*
  2. après toute préposition (in, on, at, of, about, for, without, before, after, by, instead of…) : *She is good at drawing. Thank you for helping me. He left without saying goodbye. After finishing his homework, he went out.*
  3. après certains verbes (liste ci-dessous) ;
  4. après certaines expressions : it's no use, it's worth, I can't help, I can't stand, there's no point in : It's no use crying. This film is worth seeing.

  • *look forward to* : *I look forward to seeing you.*
  • *be used to / get used to* (être / s'habituer à) : *I'm used to getting up early.*
  • *object to, be opposed to, when it comes to* : *He objects to paying more.*

Test : si tu peux mettre un nom après to (I look forward to the holidays), alors to est une préposition → -ing.

4. Verbe + to + base ou verbe + V-ing

Verbe + to + base
  • want, wish, hope, expect
  • decide, choose, plan, intend
  • agree, refuse, promise, offer
  • learn, manage, fail, try (essayer)
  • need, afford, seem, tend
Verbe + V-ing
  • enjoy, like, love, hate, prefer
  • finish, stop, give up, keep (on)
  • avoid, mind, deny, risk
  • suggest, consider, imagine, practise
  • admit, miss, delay, postpone

*Sékou decided to study medicine. — He enjoys helping sick people.*

*She refused to answer. — She avoided answering.*

*Would you mind closing the window?*

I like swimming / I like to swim. Mais *would like, would love, would prefer* sont toujours suivis de to : *I would like to visit Labé.*

5. Verbe + complément + to + base, et l'infinitif sans to

  • want, ask, tell, advise, allow, expect, encourage, invite, order, teach + complément + to : *My father wants me to become a doctor.* (et non ~~wants that I become~~) ; *The teacher told us to be quiet.*
  • infinitif sans to après :
  • les modaux : *You should rest.*
  • *make* (faire faire, obliger) et *let* (laisser) : *The rain made us stay inside. My mother lets me go out on Saturdays.*
  • *had better, would rather* : *I'd rather walk.*
  • *help* accepte les deux : *Help me (to) carry this bag.*
  • au passif, make reprend to : *We were made to wait.*

6. Les verbes qui changent de sens

Verbe+ to + base+ V-ing
rememberse souvenir de devoir faire (avant) : Remember to lock the door.se rappeler avoir fait : I remember visiting Dalaba as a child.
forgetoublier de faire : Don't forget to call your aunt.oublier avoir fait (surtout au négatif) : I'll never forget meeting her.
stops'arrêter pour faire : He stopped to buy bread.arrêter de faire : He stopped smoking.
tryessayer, s'efforcer : Try to stay calm.essayer (pour voir le résultat) : Try adding some salt.
regretregretter de devoir annoncer : We regret to inform you…regretter d'avoir fait : I regret leaving school early.
go onpasser à autre chose : After Maths, he went on to teach French.continuer : She went on talking.

Méthode

Pour choisir la forme du second verbe :

  1. Le verbe suit-il une préposition (in, at, of, about, for, without, after…) ou « to » préposition (look forward to, be used to) ? → V-ing.
  2. Le verbe est-il sujet de la phrase ? → V-ing (Swimming is fun).
  3. Le verbe suit-il un modal, make, let, had better, would rather ? → base verbale sans to.
→ to + base ; enjoy, avoid, finish… → V-ing.

Exemple

Put the verbs in the correct form.

a) Fatoumata is good at (cook).

Après la préposition at → cooking.

b) The farmers hope (get) a good harvest this year.

Hope regarde vers l'avenir → to get.

c) My uncle gave up (smoke) five years ago.

Give up (arrêter) → smoking.

d) The teacher made the students (rewrite) their essays.

Make + complément + base sans to → rewrite.

e) I'm looking forward to (visit) the Fouta-Djallon.

To est ici une préposition → visiting.

Exemple

Explain the difference.

« Ibrahima stopped to talk to his friend.

« Ibrahima stopped talking to his friend.

« I remember to lock the door.

« I remember locking the door. » → Je me souviens d'avoir fermé la porte (action déjà faite).

3Je retiens

To + base : après want, hope, decide, plan, agree, refuse, promise, learn, manage, afford, would like.

Base sans to : après les modaux, make, let, had better, would rather.

Verbe + complément + to : want / ask / tell / advise / allow someone to do.

To préposition + V-ing : look forward to, be used to, get used to, object to.

  • Mettre l'infinitif après une préposition : « interested in helping », pas « interested in help » ni « interested to help ».
  • Oublier que to est préposition : « I look forward to hearing from you », pas « to hear ».
  • Traduire « il veut que je vienne » par une subordonnée : « He wants me to come », pas « He wants that I come ».
  • Mettre to après make ou let : « They made me wait », pas « They made me to wait ».
