- 50 min

Ibrahima : « The match was boring. I was bored after twenty minutes. »
Sékou : « No! It was exciting! I was excited at the end, when we scored. »
Leur camarade Kadiatou intervient : « Attention, Ibrahima, tout à l'heure tu as dit I am boring. »
Tout le monde rit. Puis Sékou décrit le joueur qui a marqué : « He is a well-known, left-footed, twenty-year-old player.
Beaucoup d'adjectifs de sentiment viennent d'un verbe qui signifie « provoquer un sentiment » : to bore (ennuyer), to interest (intéresser), to surprise (surprendre), to tire (fatiguer), to frighten (effrayer).
- L'adjectif en -ing décrit la chose ou la personne qui provoque le sentiment (la cause) : The film is interesting. (le film intéresse)
- L'adjectif en -ed décrit la personne qui ressent le sentiment (l'effet) : I am interested in the film. (je suis intéressé)
- The lesson is interesting.
- The journey was tiring.
- The news is surprising.
- The storm was frightening.
- Her story is amazing.
- The students are interested.
- The passengers were tired.
- Everybody is surprised.
- The children were frightened.
- We are amazed.
My uncle is very interesting (il intéresse les gens) ; My uncle is interested in history (il s'intéresse à l'histoire).
2. Les paires les plus fréquentes
| Verbe | -ing (cause) | -ed (ressenti) | Préposition après -ed |
|---|---|---|---|
| bore | boring | bored | with |
| interest | interesting | interested | in |
| excite | exciting | excited | about |
| tire | tiring | tired | of |
| surprise | surprising | surprised | at / by |
| frighten | frightening | frightened | of |
| disappoint | disappointing | disappointed | with / by |
| worry | worrying | worried | about |
| embarrass | embarrassing | embarrassed | about |
| satisfy | satisfying | satisfied | with |
| confuse | confusing | confused | about |
| amaze | amazing | amazed | at / by |
Remarque : tired of signifie « las de, fatigué de » : I'm tired of waiting.
4. Les principaux modèles de formation
| Modèle | Exemples |
|---|---|
| adjectif + nom + -ed | *a blue-eyed baby, a long-legged runner, a kind-hearted woman, a left-handed player, short-sleeved shirts* |
| adverbe / adjectif + participe passé | *a well-known writer, a well-dressed man, a badly-paid job, home-made juice, sun-dried fish* |
| adjectif / adverbe / nom + V-ing | *a good-looking boy, a hard-working farmer, a fast-growing town, a peace-loving people, a time-consuming task* |
| nombre + nom (au singulier) | *a five-kilometre walk, a three-day trip, a ten-year-old girl, a 100-page book, a 5,000-franc note* |
| nom + adjectif | *a world-famous singer, duty-free goods, a sugar-free drink, an ice-cold drink* |
| adjectif + adjectif | *a dark-blue dress, a bitter-sweet memory* |
- *The girl is ten years old.* (après le verbe, years est un nom normal, au pluriel)
- *She is a ten-year-old girl.* (devant le nom, adjectif composé, singulier)
- *The trip lasts three days. → It's a three-day trip.*
5. À quoi servent les adjectifs composés ?
Ils permettent de condenser une proposition relative : a woman who has a kind heart → a kind-hearted woman ; juice which is made at home → home-made juice ; a meeting which lasts two hours → a two-hour meeting.
- Je repère l'information qui décrit le nom (souvent dans une relative : who has…, which is made…, which lasts…).
Exemple
Rewrite using a compound adjective.
a) A man who works hard → a hard-working man. (adverbe + V-ing)
b) A girl who has brown eyes → a brown-eyed girl. (adjectif + nom + -ed)
c) Fish which is dried in the sun → sun-dried fish. (nom + participe passé)
d) A walk of twelve kilometres from Dalaba → a twelve-kilometre walk from Dalaba. (nombre + nom au singulier)
e) A boy who is fifteen years old → a fifteen-year-old boy. (years devient year)
Exemple
Choose the correct adjective.
« The history lesson was (interesting / interested), but after two hours the students were (tiring / tired). The teacher was (disappointing / disappointed) with their marks. »
La leçon provoque l'intérêt → interesting.
Les élèves ressentent la fatigue → tired.
Le professeur ressent la déception → disappointed.
3Je retiens
Modèles : kind-hearted, well-known, hard-working, three-day, world-famous, dark-blue.
Nombre + nom : le nom reste au singulier : a ten-year-old girl, a two-hour meeting.
Un adjectif composé remplace souvent une relative : a man who works hard → a hard-working man.
4Erreurs fréquentes
- Dire « I am boring » pour « je m'ennuie » : on dit « I am bored » (boring = ennuyeux).
- Mettre le pluriel dans un adjectif composé : « a five-year-old child », pas « a five-years-old child ».
- Oublier le trait d'union : « a well-known writer », mais « the writer is well known » (après le verbe, le trait d'union disparaît souvent).
- Se tromper de préposition : « interested in », « tired of », « worried about ».
