I'd like… How much is it?)
  • Marchander poliment et calculer un total

Avant de commencer : Les dénombrables et indénombrables, how much / how many (leçon 12), les comparatifs (leçon 11).

« Good morning, madam. Can I help you? » demande le vendeur.

« Yes, please. How much is this cloth? » répond Aïssatou.

« It's one hundred and fifty thousand francs. »

2Je comprends

1. Les grands nombres

NombreEn anglais
100one hundred (a hundred)
250two hundred and fifty
1 000one thousand (a thousand)
5 500five thousand five hundred
25 000twenty-five thousand
150 000one hundred and fifty thousand
1 000 000one million
2 500 000two million five hundred thousand

2. Le vocabulaire des achats

MotSens
a shop / a storeune boutique
a marketun marché
a shopkeeper / a sellerun commerçant, un vendeur
a customerun client
the pricele prix
cheap / expensivebon marché / cher
to buy / to sellacheter / vendre
to pay / to costpayer / coûter
the changela monnaie (rendue)
a discountune réduction

Verbes irréguliers utiles : buy – bought – bought ; sell – sold – sold ; pay – paid – paid ; cost – cost – cost ; spend – spent – spent.

  • *a kilo of rice, half a kilo of sugar, a litre of oil, a metre of cloth, a bag of onions, a bunch of bananas, a tin of tomato paste, a packet of biscuits, a loaf of bread, a dozen eggs* (une douzaine = 12).

Questions : *How much rice do you want? — Two kilos, please.* *How many mangoes? — Six, please.*

4. Les formules du dialogue

Le vendeurLe client
Good morning. Can I help you?Yes, please. I'd like a kilo of meat.
What would you like?I'm looking for a school bag.
What size / colour?Have you got a bigger one / a blue one?
Here you are.How much is it? / How much are they?
It's 15,000 francs. That's too expensive. Can you lower the price?
Anything else? No, thank you. That's all.
That's 30,000 francs altogether. Here you are. / Can I pay by mobile money?
Here's your change.Thank you. Goodbye!

Remarque : *How much is it?* (singulier) et *How much are they?* (pluriel). *I'd like* (= I would like) est plus poli que I want.

5. Marchander poliment

Au marché, discuter le prix est habituel. En anglais, on reste poli :

  • It's a bit expensive. / That's too expensive for me.
  • Can you give me a discount? / Can you make it cheaper?
  • I can pay 12,000 francs. / What's your last price?
  • OK, it's a deal! (d'accord, marché conclu !)

Le comparatif est très utile : *Have you got a cheaper one? This one is more expensive than the other.*

  1. 1Saluer et demander : Good morning. I'd like… / Have you got…?
  2. 2Préciser la quantité ou la taille : two kilos, a bigger one.
  3. 3Demander le prix : How much is it? / How much are they?
  4. 4Discuter le prix : That's too expensive. Can you give me a discount?
  5. 5Conclure : OK, I'll take it. / Anything else? — That's all.
  6. 6Payer et remercier : Here you are. Here's your change. Thank you!

  2. J'additionne tous les montants.
  3. Je vérifie mon calcul une deuxième fois.
  4. J'annonce : « That's … francs altogether. »
  5. Si le client donne un billet, je soustrais pour trouver la monnaie : « Here's your change: … francs. »

Exemple

Aïssatou buys food. Prices (exemples) : rice 10,000 francs a kilo, oil 25,000 francs a litre, onions 5,000 francs a bag.

She buys 3 kilos of rice, 2 litres of oil and 1 bag of onions.

Rice: 3 × 10,000 = 30,000 francs.

Oil: 2 × 25,000 = 50,000 francs.

Onions: 1 × 5,000 = 5,000 francs.

Total: 30,000 + 50,000 + 5,000 = 85,000 francs.

She gives 100,000 francs. Change: 100,000 − 85,000 = 15,000 francs.

Shopkeeper: "That's eighty-five thousand francs altogether. Here's your change: fifteen thousand francs."

Exemple

Bargaining for a school bag.

Customer: Good afternoon. I'm looking for a school bag.

Seller: This one is very strong. It's 90,000 francs.

Customer: That's too expensive! Have you got a cheaper one?

Seller: This one is 70,000 francs.

Customer: Can you give me a discount? I can pay 60,000 francs.

Seller: My last price is 65,000 francs.

Customer: OK, it's a deal. Here you are: 70,000 francs.

Seller: Here's your change: 5,000 francs. Thank you!

(70,000 − 65,000 = 5,000 francs.)

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Grands nombres : hundred, thousand, million sans -s (five thousand) ; 250 = two hundred and fifty.

Quantités : a kilo of, a litre of, a metre of, a bag of, a bunch of, a dozen.

Vendeur : Can I help you? Anything else? That's … altogether. Here's your change.

Client : I'd like… Have you got…? How much is it / are they? That's all.

Marchander : That's too expensive. Can you give me a discount? Have you got a cheaper one? It's a deal!

buy – bought ; sell – sold ; pay – paid ; cost – cost ; spend – spent.

  • Confondre How much is it (un article) et How much are they (plusieurs articles).
  • Utiliser « I want » avec un vendeur : « I'd like… » ou « Can I have…, please? » est plus poli.
