Comparative and superlative adjectives and adverbs

  • Connaître les formes irrégulières (good, bad, far, little, much, well, badly)
  • Utiliser les structures « the… the… », « more and more », « as… as »

« Labé is cooler than Kankan. Kankan is hotter and drier. »

Son camarade Mamadou ajoute :

« Mount Nimba is the highest mountain in Guinea. »

Puis le professeur demande de comparer deux élèves qui courent : « Alpha runs faster than Ibrahima, but Ibrahima runs more regularly. »

Kadiatou remarque qu'on dit cooler et hotter avec -er, mais more regularly avec more. Pourquoi hotter prend-il deux t ? Et pourquoi dit-on the highest et non the most high ?

  • adjectif court : une syllabe (tall, hot, cheap) ou deux syllabes terminées par -y (happy, easy, dry) → on ajoute -er / -est ;
  • adjectif long : deux syllabes ou plus (modern, expensive, difficult, beautiful) → on utilise more / the most.

2. Le comparatif de supériorité

  • court : adjectif-er + than : Kankan is hotter than Labé.
  • long : more + adjectif + than : Conakry is more crowded than Dalaba.

Orthographe

  • -e final : on ajoute seulement -r / -st : large → larger → the largest ;
  • consonne + y → -ier / -iest : dry → drier → the driest ; heavy → heavier ;

3. Égalité et infériorité

  • égalité : as + adjectif + as : Sékou is as tall as his father. À la forme négative : not as (so)… as : This road is not as good as the new one.
  • infériorité : less + adjectif + than : Fish is less expensive than meat. (souvent remplacé par not as… as dans la langue courante : Fish is not as expensive as meat.)

4. Le superlatif

  • court : the + adjectif-est : Mount Nimba is the highest mountain in Guinea.
  • long : the most + adjectif : This is the most interesting book I have ever read.
  • infériorité : the least + adjectif : It is the least expensive phone in the shop.

Après un superlatif, on emploie in devant un lieu ou un groupe (in Guinea, in the class) et of devant un nombre ou une période (of the three, of the year). On trouve aussi souvent le present perfect avec ever : the best film I have ever seen.

5. Les formes irrégulières

Adjectif / adverbeComparatifSuperlatif
good / wellbetterthe best
bad / badlyworsethe worst
farfarther / furtherthe farthest / the furthest
little (quantité)lessthe least
much / manymorethe most
old (famille)elderthe eldest

Sinon on dit older : He is older than me. Further signifie aussi « supplémentaire » : further information.

Adjectif court
  • cheap, hot, dry, easy
  • cheaper than, hotter than
  • the cheapest, the driest
  • Consonne doublée : big, bigger
Adjectif long
  • modern, expensive, useful
  • more modern than
  • the most expensive
  • Pas de -er : more useful

6. Les adverbes

  • Adverbes d'une syllabe (et early) : -er / -est : fast → faster → the fastest ; hard → harder ; early → earlier → the earliest.
  • Adverbes en -ly : more / the most : carefully → more carefully → the most carefully ; quickly → more quickly.
  • Irréguliers : well → better → best ; badly → worse → worst ; far → farther/further.

Alpha runs faster than Ibrahima. Ibrahima runs more regularly.

Au superlatif, on omet souvent the avec un adverbe : Who works (the) hardest?

7. Structures utiles pour la rédaction

  • Progression : comparatif + and + comparatif : Life is getting more and more expensive. The days are getting hotter and hotter.
  • Proportion : the + comparatif…, the + comparatif : The more you read, the better you write. The harder you work, the more you earn.
  • Renforcer un comparatif : much, far, a lot, even : Conakry is much bigger than Mamou. (jamais ~~very bigger~~).
  • Multiples : twice as… as, three times as… as : This bag is twice as heavy as that one.

Méthode

Pour former un comparatif ou un superlatif :

  2. Je vérifie s'il est irrégulier (good, well, bad, badly, far, little, much, many).
  3. Sinon je compte les syllabes : court → -er / -est ; long ou adverbe en -ly → more / the most.
  4. J'applique l'orthographe (y → i, consonne doublée, e final).
  5. J'ajoute than pour un comparatif, the (et in / of) pour un superlatif, as… as pour l'égalité.

Exemple

Put the adjectives or adverbs in brackets in the correct form.

a) The Niger is (long) river in West Africa.

b) Today is (hot) than yesterday.

c) Hawa speaks English (fluently) than her sister.

d) This is (bad) result of the class.

a) Long est court, superlatif : the longest.

b) Hot : une syllabe consonne-voyelle-consonne → on double le t : hotter.

c) Fluently : adverbe en -ly → more fluently.

d) Bad est irrégulier, superlatif : the worst.

Answers: the longest ; hotter ; more fluently ; the worst.

Exemple

Rewrite the sentence without changing its meaning.

« Nobody in the class is as clever as Mariama. »

Clever accepte -er / -est → superlatif : the cleverest.

Answer: Mariama is the cleverest student in the class.

Autre réponse possible : Mariama is cleverer than all the other students in the class.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Adjectif court (1 syllabe ou 2 syllabes en -y) : -er than / the -est (cheap, cheaper, the cheapest ; easy, easier, the easiest).

Adjectif long et adverbe en -ly : more… than / the most… (more modern, the most carefully).

Égalité : as… as ; infériorité : less… than, not as… as ; superlatif d'infériorité : the least.

Irréguliers : good/well → better → the best ; bad/badly → worse → the worst ; far → further → the furthest ; little → less → the least ; much/many → more → the most.

the + superlatif + in (lieu, groupe) / of (nombre, période).

The more…, the more… ; more and more… ; much / far + comparatif.

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Mélanger les deux formes : on écrit « bigger » ou « more modern », jamais « more bigger ».
  • Confondre than et that : « She is taller than me », pas « taller that me ».
  • Oublier l'irrégularité : « better », « the worst », pas « gooder », « the baddest ».
  • Mettre very devant un comparatif : on écrit « much older », pas « very older ».
