Relative pronouns: who, which, that, whose (les pronoms relatifs)

*« I have an uncle. My uncle lives in Kankan. He has a shop. The shop sells bicycles. I have a cousin. Her mother is a nurse. »*
Relie tes phrases ! » Lansana corrige :
« I have an uncle who lives in Kankan. He has a shop which sells bicycles. I have a cousin whose mother is a nurse. »
*The girl who won the prize is my sister.*
Antécédent : the girl ; proposition relative : who won the prize.
2. Who : pour les personnes
who remplace une personne.
*The man who repairs our car lives in Matoto.* (who = sujet de repairs)
*The teacher who we met yesterday is very kind.* (who = complément de met)
Dans un anglais très soutenu, on rencontre whom quand le pronom est complément : The teacher whom we met… Au collège, who ou that suffisent.
3. Which : pour les choses et les animaux
which remplace une chose ou un animal.
*The bus which goes to Labé leaves at 6.*
*The cow which my father bought is black.*
4. That : pour les personnes et les choses
that peut remplacer who ou which dans les relatives qui définissent l'antécédent (sans virgules).
*The boy that is singing is Alpha.* *The book that I am reading is interesting.*
*I have a friend. His father is a pilot.* → *I have a friend whose father is a pilot.*
*This is the woman whose son won the race.*
Attention : ne confonds pas whose (possession) et who's (= who is).
The book (which / that) I bought is expensive. → The book I bought is expensive.
The girl (who / that) you saw is my cousin. → The girl you saw is my cousin.
*The girl who sings is my cousin.* ~~The girl sings is my cousin.~~
The pupils who work hard will pass.
My father, who is a farmer, gets up early.
|---|---|---|---|
| who | personne | sujet ou complément | the nurse who helped me |
| which | chose, animal | sujet ou complément | the river which crosses the town |
| that | personne ou chose | sujet ou complément, sans virgule | the car that I like |
| whose | personne (souvent) | possession + nom | the boy whose bike was stolen |
- 2Personne → who (ou that) ; chose ou animal → which (ou that).
- Je choisis : who (personne), which (chose), whose (possession).
Exemple
Join the sentences: « I know a woman. She sells fish at the market. »
Élément répété : a woman / She (une personne, sujet de sells).
Pronom : who (ou that). On supprime She.
Answer: I know a woman who sells fish at the market.
Exemple
Join the sentences: « The river is very long. It crosses Guinea. »
Élément répété : The river / It (une chose, sujet de crosses).
Answer: The river which crosses Guinea is very long.
Exemple
Join the sentences: « This is Mariama. Her brother is a doctor in Kankan. »
Her brother → possession : whose + nom, sans article.
Answer: This is Mariama, whose brother is a doctor in Kankan.
3Je retiens
Pas de pronom personnel en double : « the man who lives », pas « the man who he lives ».
4Erreurs fréquentes
- Employer which pour une personne : « the teacher who teaches us », pas « the teacher which teaches us ».
- Répéter le pronom personnel : « The boy who plays football », pas « The boy who he plays football ».
- Mettre un article après whose : « the man whose car is red », pas « the man whose the car is red ».
- Confondre whose et who's : « Who's there? » (who is) ; « Whose book is this? » (à qui).
