Comparative adjectives

  • Exprimer l'égalité et l'infériorité (as… as, not as… as, less… than)
  • Former le superlatif
  • Utiliser les structures the more… the more et -er and -er

Aïssatou commence : « Labé is cooler than Kankan, because it is in the Fouta-Djallon mountains. »

Lansana répond : « Yes, but Kankan is bigger and flatter. And the Milo River is more beautiful than any river in Labé! »

Aïssatou rit : « That's your opinion! For me, Labé is the most beautiful town in Guinea. »

Leur professeur les félicite, puis ajoute une question : « Pourquoi dit-on cooler et bigger avec -er, mais more beautiful avec more ? Et pourquoi écrit-on bigger avec deux g ? »

Type d'adjectifFormationExemples
Court (1 syllabe)adjectif + -er + thantall → taller than ; cheap → cheaper than
2 syllabes terminé par -y-y → -ier + thanhappy → happier ; easy → easier ; heavy → heavier
Long (2 syllabes ou plus, sauf -y)*more* + adjectif + thanmore expensive than ; more modern than ; more careful than

*Mount Nimba is higher than Mount Loura. Rice is cheaper than meat. This exercise is easier than the last one. Conakry is more crowded than Dalaba.*

Règles d'orthographe du -er :

  • adjectif terminé par -e : on ajoute -r : large → larger, nice → nicer ;
  • une voyelle + une consonne finale : on double la consonne : big → bigger, hot → hotter, thin → thinner, wet → wetter ;
  • consonne + y → -ier : dry → drier, busy → busier.

Quelques adjectifs de deux syllabes acceptent les deux formes : clever → cleverer / more clever ; narrow → narrower / more narrow ; quiet → quieter / more quiet.

2. Les comparatifs irréguliers

AdjectifComparatifSuperlatif
goodbetterthe best
badworsethe worst
farfarther / furtherthe farthest / the furthest
littlelessthe least
much / manymorethe most
oldolder / elderthe oldest / the eldest

Elder / eldest s'emploient pour les membres d'une famille, devant le nom : my elder brother, her eldest daughter.

3. L'égalité et l'infériorité

  • Égalité : as + adjectif + *as* : Kadiatou is as tall as her mother.
  • Infériorité :
  • not as / not so + adjectif + *as* (le plus courant) : The Konkouré is not as long as the Niger.
This road is less dangerous than the old one.
  • Multiplication : twice as big as, three times as expensive as.

4. Renforcer ou nuancer un comparatif

On peut ajouter devant le comparatif : *much, far, a lot* (beaucoup), *a little, a bit, slightly* (un peu), *even* (encore) : The new bridge is much longer than the old one. Today it is even hotter than yesterday. (et jamais ~~very taller~~)

5. Les structures de progression et de parallélisme

  • de plus en plus : *-er and -er* (adjectifs courts) ou more and more + adjectif long : The days are getting hotter and hotter. Life is becoming more and more expensive.
  • de moins en moins : *less and less* : The river is less and less deep during the dry season.
  • plus… plus : the + comparatif…, the + comparatif : The more you read, the better you write. The harder you work, the more successful you will be.

6. Le superlatif

Type d'adjectifFormationExemple
Courtthe + adjectif + -estthe tallest, the biggest, the largest
2 syllabes en -ythe + -iestthe happiest, the easiest
Longthe most + adjectifthe most important, the most beautiful
Inférioritéthe least + adjectifthe least expensive

Après un superlatif, « de » se traduit par *in* devant un lieu ou un groupe (*the highest mountain in Guinea, the best student in the class*) et par *of* devant un ensemble ou une période (*the best day of my life, the tallest of the three*).

Mount Nimba is the highest point in Guinea.

Adjectif court (1 syllabe)
  • cheap → cheaper than
  • big → bigger than
  • the cheapest
  • as cheap as / not as cheap as
  • cheaper and cheaper
Adjectif long (2 syllabes ou plus)
  • expensive → more expensive than
  • modern → more modern than
  • the most expensive
  • as expensive as / less expensive than
  • more and more expensive

  1. Je compte les syllabes de l'adjectif.
  2. Une syllabe, ou deux syllabes terminées par -y : -er / the -est (avec les règles d'orthographe : doubler la consonne, y → i, e → r).
  3. Deux syllabes ou plus (sauf -y) : more / the most.
  4. Je vérifie les irréguliers : good, bad, far, little, many.
  5. Comparatif : j'ajoute than. Superlatif : j'ajoute the devant, et in (lieu, groupe) ou of (ensemble).
  6. Égalité : as… as ; infériorité : not as… as ou less… than.

Exemple

Compare, using the adjective in brackets.

a) A motorbike / a bicycle (fast)

fast = 1 syllabe → A motorbike is faster than a bicycle.

b) The capital / a village (noisy)

noisy = 2 syllabes en -y → The capital is noisier than a village.

c) Mathematics / drawing (difficult) — for Sékou

difficult = 3 syllabes → For Sékou, mathematics is more difficult than drawing.

d) This year's harvest / last year's harvest (good)

irrégulier → This year's harvest is better than last year's.

Exemple

Rewrite the sentences as asked.

« Hawa is 1.65 m tall. Fanta is 1.65 m tall too. » (equality)

→ Hawa is as tall as Fanta.

« Oranges cost 5,000 GNF a kilo; mangoes cost 8,000 GNF a kilo. » (not as… as)

→ Oranges are not as expensive as mangoes. (ou : Oranges are cheaper than mangoes.)

« You practise a lot. You speak well. » (the more… the better)

→ The more you practise, the better you speak.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Adjectif court (1 syllabe) : -er than / the -est (taller, the tallest ; bigger, the biggest).

Adjectif de 2 syllabes en -y : -ier / the -iest (happier, the happiest).

Adjectif long : more… than / the most… (more expensive, the most expensive).

Irréguliers : good, better, the best ; bad, worse, the worst ; far, further, the furthest.

Égalité : as… as. Infériorité : not as… as, less… than, the least.

Progression : hotter and hotter, more and more expensive. Parallélisme : the more…, the better…

Superlatif + in (lieu, groupe) ou of (ensemble, période).

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Cumuler more et -er : « bigger », pas « more bigger » ; « the best », pas « the most good ».
  • Utiliser that ou then à la place de than : « older than me ».
  • Traduire « de » par of après un superlatif de lieu : « the best student in the class », pas « of the class ».

Example answer:

*I live in Mamou, and I often visit my cousins in Boké. Mamou is cooler than Boké, because it is higher. Boké is not as quiet as Mamou: there are more trucks and more people because of the mines. In my opinion, the most pleasant season in Mamou is the dry season, and the busiest place is the big market. The more I travel, the more I love my own town.*
