Pronouns and possessives

  • 50 min
  • 6 exercices corrigés
  • 1 schéma
  • QCM de 5 questions

À la fin de la leçon, tu sauras :

  • Distinguer pronom sujet et pronom complément
  • Accorder l'adjectif possessif avec le possesseur (his / her / its)
  • Employer les pronoms possessifs (mine, yours, hers…)
  • Utiliser les pronoms réfléchis et réciproques (myself, each other)
  • Éviter les confusions its / it's, their / there / they're

« Is this bag yours? »

Fatoumata répond, un peu troublée : « No, it's not my… It's of my aunt. Her bag is red, and mine… my is blue. »

Le commerçant sourit et l'aide : « Ah, it's your aunt's bag. Hers is red and yours is blue. »

2Je comprends

1. Le tableau général

PersonnePronom sujetPronom complémentAdjectif possessifPronom possessifPronom réfléchi
1re sing.Imemyminemyself
2e sing.youyouyouryoursyourself
3e sing. masc.hehimhishishimself
3e sing. fém.sheherherhersherself
3e sing. neutreititits—itself
1re plur.weusouroursourselves
2e plur.youyouyouryoursyourselves
3e plur.theythemtheirtheirsthemselves

2. Pronoms sujets et pronoms compléments

  • Le pronom sujet fait l'action, il est devant le verbe : *She teaches in Labé.*
  • Le pronom complément est après un verbe ou une préposition : *I know her. Come with us. This letter is for him.*

Après than et as, et dans les réponses courtes, on emploie en anglais courant le pronom complément : *He is taller than me. — Who wants tea? — Me!* (plus formel : taller than I am).

On utilise *it* pour les objets, les animaux (en général) et dans les tournures impersonnelles : *It is raining. It is hot in Kankan. It takes two hours to get there.*

  • *Alpha and his sister* (le possesseur est Alpha, un homme → his)
  • *Aïssatou and her brother* (le possesseur est Aïssatou, une femme → her)
  • *The tree and its leaves* (possesseur non humain → its)
  • *The students and their teacher* (plusieurs possesseurs → their)

L'adjectif possessif est invariable : my book, my books.

En anglais, on emploie le possessif pour les parties du corps et les vêtements : *He broke his arm. She put on her pagne.* (en français : « il s'est cassé le bras »).

*This is my phone. → This phone is mine.* (le mien)

*Is this your pen or hers?* (le sien, à elle)

*Our house is small; theirs is big.* (la leur)

Expression utile : *a friend of mine* (un de mes amis), a cousin of hers.

Adjectif possessif + nom
  • It is my bag.
  • It is your book.
  • It is his car.
  • It is her dress.
  • It is our school.
  • It is their field.
Pronom possessif seul
  • It is mine.
  • It is yours.
  • It is his.
  • It is hers.
  • It is ours.
  • It is theirs.

Enjoy yourselves!*
  2. pour insister (« moi-même », « lui-même ») : *I made this dress myself. The headmaster himself came to congratulate us.*
  3. *by + pronom réfléchi* = seul, sans aide : *She lives by herself. He repaired the radio by himself.*

Attention : de nombreux verbes pronominaux en français ne le sont pas en anglais : se lever = get up, se laver = wash, se réveiller = wake up, se souvenir = remember, se sentir = feel : I feel tired (et non ~~I feel myself tired~~).

6. Les pronoms réciproques : each other / one another

« Les uns les autres », « l'un l'autre » : *each other* (deux personnes, surtout) ou *one another* (plusieurs) : *Fanta and Hawa help each other with their homework.*

Différence de sens : *They looked at themselves in the mirror* (chacun se regarde soi-même) / *They looked at each other* (ils se regardaient l'un l'autre).

7. Des homophones à ne pas confondre

  • *its* (possessif : son, sa, à une chose) / *it's* (= it is ou it has) : *The dog wagged its tail. It's late.*
  • *their* (leur) / *there* (là, il y a) / *they're* (= they are) : *They're in their classroom over there.*
  • *your* (ton, votre) / *you're* (= you are).
  • *whose* (à qui) / *who's* (= who is).

Méthode

Pour choisir le bon mot :

I / me, she / her, they / them.
  2. Exprime-t-il la possession ? Si un nom suit : adjectif possessif (my, his, her…). Si aucun nom ne suit : pronom possessif (mine, his, hers…).
  3. Pour la 3e personne du singulier, je regarde le possesseur : homme → his ; femme → her ; chose ou animal → its.
  5. Je vérifie les apostrophes : it's = it is ; its = possessif.

Exemple

Complete with the correct possessive.

a) Ibrahima lives with … aunt in Mamou. (possesseur : Ibrahima → his)

b) Kadiatou lost … keys. (possesseur : Kadiatou → her)

c) Guinea is proud of … culture. (un pays, traité comme une chose → its ; on trouve aussi her dans un style littéraire)

d) « Is this Sékou's book? » — « Yes, it's … » (pas de nom après → his)

e) « Are these your sandals? » — « No, they aren't … . Mine are black. » (pas de nom après → mine)

Answers: a) his b) her c) its d) his e) mine

Exemple

Correct the mistakes.

a) « Me and my brother went to Kindia. » → My brother and I went to Kindia.

b) « This book is her's. » → This book is hers. (jamais d'apostrophe dans les pronoms possessifs)

c) « The school has changed it's timetable. » → The school has changed its timetable.

d) « They love themselves very much. » (un couple qui s'aime) → They love each other very much.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Sujet : I, you, he, she, it, we, they. Complément : me, you, him, her, it, us, them.

Adjectif possessif + nom : my, your, his, her, its, our, their. Il s'accorde avec le possesseur (his = à lui, her = à elle).

Pronom possessif sans nom : mine, yours, his, hers, ours, theirs. Jamais d'apostrophe, jamais de the.

Réfléchi : myself, yourself, himself, herself, itself, ourselves, yourselves, themselves ; by + réfléchi = seul.

Réciproque : each other, one another.

its (possessif) ≠ it's (it is) ; their ≠ there ≠ they're.

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Accorder le possessif avec l'objet comme en français : « Aïssatou and her father », pas « Aïssatou and his father ».
  • Mettre une apostrophe à its, hers, ours, yours, theirs : « The bird built its nest ».
