« one box, two box… one knife, three knife… one child's shoe, five child's shoe… »
2Je comprends
| Singulier | Pluriel |
|---|---|
| a book | books |
| a pen | pens |
| a girl | girls |
| a mango | mangoes (voir plus bas) |
| a day | days |
| a boy | boys |
- a bus → buses
- a glass → glasses
- a dish → dishes
- a church → churches, a watch → watches
- a box → boxes
D'autres prennent seulement -s : photo → photos, radio → radios, piano → pianos, video → videos.
4. Les noms en -y
On regarde la lettre avant le y :
- consonne + y → on remplace le y par -ies : a baby → babies, a city → cities, a country → countries, a family → families, a lady → ladies.
- voyelle + y (ay, ey, oy) → on ajoute simplement -s : a day → days, a key → keys, a boy → boys, a toy → toys.
- a knife → knives (couteaux)
- a wife → wives (épouses)
- a leaf → leaves (feuilles)
- a half → halves (moitiés)
- a loaf → loaves (pains)
- a shelf → shelves (étagères)
Attention, quelques-uns prennent seulement -s : a roof → roofs (toits), a chief → chiefs (chefs).
| Singulier | Pluriel | Sens |
|---|---|---|
| a man | men | hommes |
| a woman | women | femmes |
| a child | children | enfants |
| a person | people | personnes, gens |
| a foot | feet | pieds |
| a tooth | teeth | dents |
| a mouse | mice | souris |
7. Un tableau pour tout résumer
- 1Le nom finit par -s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x ou -z ? J'ajoute -es : box → boxes, dish → dishes.
- 2Le nom finit par consonne + y ? Je remplace y par -ies : city → cities.
- 3Le nom finit par voyelle + y ? J'ajoute -s : day → days, key → keys.
- 4Le nom finit par -f ou -fe (knife, leaf, wife, half) ? Souvent -ves : knife → knives.
- 5Le nom est irrégulier (man, woman, child, foot, tooth, person) ? J'utilise la forme apprise.
- 6Sinon, j'ajoute simplement -s : pen → pens.
- *The book is on the table.* → *The books are on the table.*
- *This child is happy.* → *These children are happy.*
- Je mets le verbe be au pluriel : is devient are.
Exemple
Put the nouns in the plural.
a baby → consonne (b) + y → babies.
a key → voyelle (e) + y → keys.
a watch → finit par -ch → watches.
a leaf → finit par -f → leaves.
a woman → irrégulier → women.
Exemple
Put the sentence in the plural.
« There is a big box in the room, and a child is sitting on it. »
a big box → big boxes (box + es ; big sans -s)
a child → children (irrégulier)
is → are
Answer: There are big boxes in the room, and children are sitting on them.
(it devient them, car on parle maintenant de plusieurs boîtes.)
10. Au marché
Relis la liste de Fatoumata, maintenant correcte :
two boxes of soap, three knives, ten tomatoes, five pairs of children's shoes, twenty mangoes, four watches.
3Je retiens
Je retiens
Règle générale : nom + s (books, girls, days).
-s, -ss, -sh, -ch, -x, -z → + es (buses, dishes, watches, boxes) ; potato, tomato, mango → + es.
Consonne + y → ies (city → cities) ; voyelle + y → s (key → keys).
knife → knives, leaf → leaves, wife → wives, half → halves.
Irréguliers : man → men, woman → women, child → children, person → people, foot → feet, tooth → teeth, mouse → mice ; sheep et fish ne changent pas.
- Mettre un -s à l'adjectif : « two bigs houses » est faux ; on écrit « two big houses ».
- Ne pas prononcer le -s final : en anglais, on dit « boo-ks » et « bu-siz », le -s s'entend.
