My house: rooms and furniture (la maison : pièces et meubles)

  • Situer un objet avec in, on, under, next to, behind, in front of, between
  • Décrire sa maison avec there is, there are et have got

Avant de commencer : There is / there are, have got, les articles a, an, the et le pluriel des noms.

How many rooms are there? »

indans*The clothes are in the wardrobe.*
onsur*The radio is on the table.*
undersous*The shoes are under the bed.*
next toà côté de*The chair is next to the bed.*
behindderrière*The well is behind the house.*
in front ofdevant*The mango tree is in front of the house.*
betweenentre*The table is between the two chairs.*
nearprès de*The kitchen is near the yard.*

Ne confonds pas *in front of* (devant, tout près) et *opposite* (en face, de l'autre côté) : *The shop is opposite the school.* (La boutique est en face de l'école, de l'autre côté de la rue.)

5. Le plan de la maison de Mamadou

ABCDEFGHBedroom 1Bedroom 2Living roomVerandaYard, well, mango tree

  • there is / there are : There are four rooms in my house. There is a well in the yard.
  • have got : We have got a big yard. My house has got a tin roof. (un toit en tôle)
  • to be + adjectif : My bedroom is small. The kitchen is clean.
  • préposition de lieu : The mat is on the floor, next to the bed.

Quelques adjectifs utiles : big (grand), small (petit), new (neuf), old (vieux), clean (propre), beautiful (beau), comfortable (confortable), cool (frais), hot (chaud).

  1. Je présente la maison : où elle est et comment elle est (My house is in… It is big / small.).
  2. Je dis combien il y a de pièces : There are … rooms: a living room, … bedrooms, a kitchen.
  3. Je décris une pièce avec ses meubles : In my bedroom, there is a bed and a wardrobe.
The radio is on the table.
  5. Je parle de l'extérieur : There is a yard with a mango tree. / There isn't a garden.

Exemple

Where is it? Answer with a preposition.

(Le chat est sous la table.) Where is the cat?

→ The cat is under the table.

(La lampe est sur l'armoire.) Where is the lamp?

→ The lamp is on the wardrobe.

Where is the bucket?

→ The bucket is between the well and the kitchen.

Exemple

Describe Mamadou's house, using the plan above.

Answer: Mamadou's house is in Kankan. There are three rooms: two bedrooms and a living room. There is a veranda in front of the house. Behind the house, there is a big yard with a well and a mango tree.

7. La réponse de Mamadou à Tom

Dear Tom,

*My house is in Kankan. It is not very big, but it is comfortable. There are four rooms: a living room, two bedrooms and a store. The kitchen is outside, in the yard. In my bedroom, there is a bed, a mat and a small wardrobe. My radio is on the table, next to the window. Behind the house, there is a well. In front of the house, there is a big mango tree. What about your house?*

Mamadou

4Erreurs fréquentes
