Leçon 10 sur 16

Using prepositions (utiliser les prépositions)

  • 50 min
  • 6 exercices corrigés
  • 2 schémas
  • QCM de 5 questions

À la fin de la leçon, tu sauras :

  • Utiliser les prépositions de lieu (in, on, at, under, next to, between, opposite…)
  • Choisir entre at, on et in pour exprimer le temps
  • Utiliser les prépositions de mouvement (to, from, into, out of, across, along)

Elle envoie un message à Kadiatou : « Where is my dictionary? »

Kadiatou répond : « It is on the table, in the living room, next to the radio. »

Grâce à trois petits mots, on, in et next to, Kadiatou a donné une indication parfaitement claire.

Le soir, Hawa écrit dans son cahier : « My English test is on Monday at 8 o'clock, in room 5. » Là encore, trois petits mots : on, at, in.

Elle se place devant un nom ou un pronom : on the table, at 8 o'clock, to the market, with me.

indans, à l'intérieur deThe pen is in my bag.
onsur (avec contact)The dictionary is on the table.
undersousThe cat is under the bed.
aboveau-dessus de (sans contact)The clock is above the door.
next to / besideà côté deThe dictionary is next to the radio.
nearprès deI live near the mosque.
betweenentre (deux)The bank is between the pharmacy and the school.
behindderrièreThe garden is behind the house.
in front ofdevantThe taxi is in front of the school.
oppositeen face deThe market is opposite the police station.
amongparmi (plusieurs)Her house is among the mango trees.
ABCDPQRSTboxonundernext toabovenext to
The ball is on, under, next to or above the box.

Attention à la différence entre at, in et on pour les lieux :

  • at : un point précis, un lieu où l'on fait une activité : at home (à la maison), at school (à l'école), at the market, at the bus station, at the door.
  • in : un espace fermé ou une ville, un pays, une région : in the classroom, in Siguiri, in Guinea, in Africa, in Upper Guinea.
  • on : une surface ou une ligne : on the wall, on the floor, on the road, on the Niger River (sur le fleuve), on the first floor (au premier étage).

Exemple

Complete with in, on or at.

a) My brother is … home. → at home (expression fixe).

b) Kankan is … Guinea. → in Guinea (un pays).

c) The map is … the wall. → on the wall (une surface).

d) The pupils are … the classroom. → in the classroom (un espace fermé).

e) I buy fish … the market. → at the market (un lieu d'activité).

3. Les prépositions de temps : at, on, in

Pour le temps, trois prépositions sont essentielles. Retiens-les du plus précis au plus large.

PrépositionS'utilise avec…Exemples
atune heure, un moment précisat 8 o'clock, at noon, at midnight, at night, at the weekend
onun jour, une dateon Monday, on Fridays, on 2 October, on my birthday
inun mois, une saison, une année, une partie de la journéein July, in the rainy season, in 2026, in the morning, in the afternoon, in the evening
  1. 1AT : une heure, un moment précis (at 7 o'clock, at noon, at night).
May, in the dry season, in 1958).
At, on, in : du plus précis au plus large.

Attention : on dit in the morning mais at night, et on dit on Monday morning (le jour l'emporte). On n'utilise pas de préposition devant today, tomorrow, yesterday, every day, next week, last year : I go to Kindia next week (et non ~~in next week~~).

Autres prépositions de temps utiles : from … to (de … à) : School is from 8 to 1. ; before (avant), after (après), during (pendant) : during the holidays.

Exemple

Complete with at, on or in.

a) Guinea became independent … 2 October 1958. → on (une date précise avec le jour).

b) … 1958, Guinea said "No" to the French proposal. → In (une année).

c) The market is busy … Saturday morning. → on (un jour, même avec morning).

d) It rains a lot … August. → in (un mois).

e) We have dinner … 8 p.m. → at (une heure).

4. Les prépositions de mouvement : où va-t-on ?

PrépositionSensExemple
tovers, à (destination)I go to school. We travel to Labé.
fromde (point de départ)My uncle comes from Boké.
intodans (en entrant)She goes into the house.
out ofhors de (en sortant)He comes out of the shop.
acrossà travers, d'un côté à l'autreWalk across the road carefully.
alongle long deWe walk along the river.
up / downen haut / en basThey climb up the hill.
throughà travers (en traversant un espace)The road goes through the forest.
pastdevant (en passant)Go past the mosque.

Attention : on dit *go home* (rentrer à la maison), sans to : I go home at 2.

Compare in (position, sans mouvement) et into (mouvement vers l'intérieur) : The children are in the classroom. / The children run into the classroom.

Méthode

Pour choisir la bonne préposition :

  2. Lieu : in (dedans, ville, pays), on (surface), at (point précis, activité), ou une préposition précise (under, next to, between…).
  3. Temps : at + heure ; on + jour ou date ; in + mois, saison, année, partie de la journée.
  4. Mouvement : to (destination), from (départ), into / out of (entrer / sortir), across, along.
  5. Je vérifie les exceptions : at home, go home, at night, pas de préposition devant next, last, every.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Lieu : in (dans ; ville, pays), on (sur), at (point précis : at home, at school), under, above, next to, near, between, behind, in front of, opposite.

Temps : at + heure (at 8), on + jour ou date (on Monday, on 2 October), in + mois, saison, année (in May, in 1958, in the morning).

Exceptions : at night, at the weekend, go home ; pas de préposition devant today, tomorrow, next week, last year, every day.

Mouvement : to (vers), from (de), into (dans, en entrant), out of (hors de), across (à travers), along (le long de), up, down, past.

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Dire « in Monday » : devant un jour, on met on : « on Monday ».
  • Dire « at the morning » : on dit « in the morning », mais « at night ».
  • Écrire « I go to home » : on dit « I go home », sans to.
  • Confondre in et into : in = position (She is in the room), into = mouvement (She goes into the room).
