Leçon 12 sur 16

Names, shapes and uses of objects (nom, forme et usage des objets)

Avant de commencer : Leçon 11 (noms d'objets, a/an, this/that, used for / used to), les adjectifs et leur place (leçon 7), les couleurs.

Alpha, qui étudie l'anglais, veut s'entraîner et lui dit : « Describe it in English! »

Fanta regarde un objet et essaie : « It's a basket. It's… round. It's big and brown. It's made of… raffia. We use it to carry things. »

Alpha est impressionné : « Great! A big round brown basket made of raffia! »

a circleround / circularun cercle / rondA plate is round.
a squaresquareun carré / carréThe window is square.
a rectanglerectangularun rectangle / rectangulaireA blackboard is rectangular.
a triangletriangularun triangle / triangulaireThe road sign is triangular.
an ovalovalun ovale / ovaleAn egg is oval.
a starstar-shapedune étoile / en étoileA starfish is star-shaped.
a cubecube-shapedun cube / cubiqueA sugar lump is cube-shaped.
a cylindercylindricalun cylindre / cylindriqueA tin can is cylindrical.
OABCDEFGHIJKcirclesquaretrianglerectangle
Four basic shapes: a circle, a square, a triangle and a rectangle.

Pour demander la forme, on dit : *What shape is it?* (Quelle forme a-t-il ?) — It's round. / It's a circle. On peut aussi dire : It's shaped like a star. (Il a la forme d'une étoile.)

2. La taille, le poids et le toucher

AdjectifContraireSens
big / largesmall / littlegrand, gros / petit
longshortlong / court
widenarrowlarge / étroit
thickthinépais / fin
high / talllowhaut / bas
heavylightlourd / léger
hardsoftdur / mou, doux
sharpblunttranchant, pointu / émoussé
smoothroughlisse / rugueux

Questions utiles : *How big is it?* (Quelle taille ?) ; *How long is it?* — It is 30 centimetres long. ; *How heavy is it?* — It weighs 2 kilograms.

3. La matière et la couleur

Pour la matière, on utilise made of + matière, ou la matière comme adjectif devant le nom :

made of…AdjectifExemple
made of woodwoodena wooden spoon (une cuillère en bois)
made of metalmetala metal pot
made of plasticplastica plastic bucket
made of clayclaya clay pot (un canari, une jarre en argile)
made of glassglassa glass bottle
made of clothclotha cloth bag
made of leatherleathera leather bag
made of paperpapera paper bag
made of goldgold / goldena gold ring

Question : *What is it made of?* (En quoi est-ce fait ?) — It is made of clay.

Pour la couleur : *What colour is it?* — It is red / green / yellow / blue / black / white / brown / grey / orange / pink / purple.

4. L'ordre des adjectifs

Quand on met plusieurs adjectifs devant un nom, l'anglais suit un ordre assez fixe. Pour ce niveau, retiens :

opinion → taille → forme → couleur → matière → NOM

  1. 1Opinion : beautiful, nice, useful
  2. 2Taille : big, small, long
  3. 3Forme : round, square, rectangular
  4. 4Couleur : red, brown, black
  5. 5Matière : wooden, clay, plastic
  6. 6Nom : basket, pot, table

Exemples :

  • a big round brown basket (taille, forme, couleur) ;
  • a beautiful small clay pot (opinion, taille, matière) ;
  • a long black wooden stick (taille, couleur, matière).

It is a big round basket. It is made of raffia.

Exemple

Put the adjectives in the right order.

a) a (black / big) pot

Taille (big) avant couleur (black) → a big black pot.

b) a (wooden / rectangular / small) box

Taille (small) → forme (rectangular) → matière (wooden) → a small rectangular wooden box.

c) a (red / beautiful) dress

Opinion (beautiful) avant couleur (red) → a beautiful red dress.

5. Décrire un objet de A à Z

Une description complète répond à six questions : What is it? What shape is it? How big is it? What colour is it? What is it made of? What is it used for?

Méthode

Pour décrire un objet complètement :

  1. Je le nomme : It is a … (a ou an).
  2. Je donne sa forme : It is round / square / rectangular…
  3. Je donne sa taille et son poids : It is big and heavy. It is 50 centimetres long.
  4. Je donne sa couleur : It is brown.
  5. Je donne sa matière : It is made of clay.
  6. Je dis à quoi il sert : It is used for keeping water cool. / We use it to…

Exemple

Description of a traditional water jar written by Mariama.

"This is a canari, a traditional water jar. It is round with a narrow opening at the top. It is quite big: it is about 60 centimetres high. It is brown or red. It is made of clay. It is heavy when it is full. We use it to keep drinking water cool in the dry season. In one sentence: it is a big round brown clay jar."

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Formes : circle (round), square (square), rectangle (rectangular), triangle (triangular), oval, cube, cylinder (cylindrical).

Questions : What shape is it? How big / long / heavy is it? What colour is it? What is it made of? What is it used for?

Taille et toucher : big / small, long / short, wide / narrow, thick / thin, heavy / light, hard / soft, sharp.

Matière : made of wood, metal, plastic, clay, glass, cloth, leather ; ou wooden spoon, clay pot.

Mesure avant l'adjectif : 30 centimetres long, 2 metres wide.

Ordre des adjectifs : opinion, taille, forme, couleur, matière, nom (a big round brown clay pot).

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Confondre le nom et l'adjectif : on écrit « The plate is round », pas « The plate is circle ».
  • Mal placer la mesure : on écrit « It is 2 metres long », pas « It is long 2 metres ».
  • Oublier of : on écrit « It is made of wood », pas « It is made wood » ni « made in wood ».
