Il écrit à son correspondant anglophone, Kwame : *« Next week, I am going to travel to my grandparents' village. I am going to take a bush taxi with my mother. In the village, I am going to help my grandfather in the field and I am going to swim in the river with my cousins. »*
Kwame lui répond : « That sounds great! How long are you going to stay there? »
2Je comprends
1. Le vocabulaire du voyage
| Anglais | Français | Anglais | Français |
|---|---|---|---|
| to leave / to set off | partir | to arrive (in / at) | arriver (à) |
| the road | la route | a dirt road / a track | une piste |
| to get on / to get off | monter / descendre (du véhicule) | a stop | un arrêt |
Remarque : luggage (les bagages) est un nom indénombrable : on ne dit pas ~~luggages~~ ; on dit my luggage ou my bags.
On dit *arrive in* une ville ou un pays (arrive in Labé), et *arrive at* un lieu précis (arrive at the bus station). On ne dit jamais ~~arrive to~~.
Pour les moyens de transport, on utilise by : by bus, by bush taxi, by car, by motorbike, by boat, by train. Mais on dit on foot (à pied).
2. Le vocabulaire du village
| Anglais | Français | Anglais | Français |
|---|---|---|---|
| to grow (rice, maize) | cultiver | to harvest | récolter |
| the harvest | la récolte | to milk (a cow) | traire |
3. Be going to : parler de ses projets
be (am / is / are) + going to + base verbale
| Forme | Exemple |
|---|---|
| Affirmative | I am going to visit my grandparents. |
| She is going to travel by bus. | |
| They are going to harvest the rice. | |
| Négative | We aren't going to stay in town. |
| He isn't going to take the train. | |
| Interrogative | Are you going to swim in the river? — Yes, I am. / No, I'm not. |
| Question ouverte | When are you going to leave? What is she going to do? |
Be going to sert aussi à prédire quelque chose qu'on voit arriver : Look at those black clouds! It is going to rain. (Il va pleuvoir.)
Mots-repères du futur : tomorrow, next week, next month, next year, soon, this evening, in two days, during the holidays.
Attention : dans I am going to go to the village, il y a deux fois go : le premier fait partie de la structure, le second est le verbe principal. C'est correct ! À l'oral, on dit souvent plus simplement I am going to the village (présent continu pour un projet).
- Action en cours maintenant
- I am packing my bag now.
- She is travelling to Labé.
- Look! It is raining.
- Projet ou intention
- I am going to pack my bag tonight.
- She is going to travel to Labé next week.
- Look at the clouds! It is going to rain.
Exemple
Write sentences with be going to.
a) Mariama / visit her aunt / next Saturday
→ Mariama is going to visit her aunt next Saturday. (Mariama = she → is)
b) We / not / travel / by train
→ We aren't going to travel by train.
c) you / help your grandfather in the field?
→ Are you going to help your grandfather in the field? — Yes, I am.
d) What / they / do / in the village?
→ What are they going to do in the village?
4. Poser des questions sur un voyage
| Question | Sens | Réponse possible |
|---|---|---|
| Where are you going? | Où vas-tu ? | I'm going to my village. |
| How are you going to travel? | Comment vas-tu voyager ? | By bush taxi. |
| When are you going to leave? | Quand vas-tu partir ? | Next Monday. |
| How long does the journey take? | Combien de temps dure le trajet ? | It takes about five hours. |
| How long are you going to stay? | Combien de temps vas-tu rester ? | For a month. |
| Who are you going with? | Avec qui y vas-tu ? | With my mother and my sister. |
Pour la durée : It takes + durée (le trajet prend…) et for + durée (pendant…) : I am going to stay there for three weeks.
- Je dis où je vais et avec qui : I am going to travel to my village with my brother.

- Je décris le trajet : The journey takes about … hours. We are going to cross a big river.

Exemple
Ibrahima's complete letter.
"Dear Kwame,
The holidays are here! Next Monday, I am going to travel to my grandparents' village, near Labé, in the Fouta-Djallon. I am going to take a bush taxi with my mother and my little sister. The journey is long, but the landscape is beautiful: there are mountains, waterfalls and green valleys.
My grandparents' village is small and quiet. There are about thirty huts, a mosque, a well and many fields. My grandfather grows maize and fonio, and he has some cows.
In the village, I am going to help my grandfather in the field. I am going to fetch water with my cousins, and we are going to swim in the stream. In the evening, my grandmother is going to tell us stories. I am going to stay there for a month.
Write to me soon!
Ibrahima"
