The future: will and going to (le futur)

Je sais parler de l'avenir en anglais en choisissant entre will et be going to selon qu'il s'agit d'une décision, d'une prédiction, d'une promesse ou d'un projet déjà prévu.

  • 50 min

Le professeur d'anglais demande à ses élèves : « What are your plans for the holidays? »

Hawa répond : « I am going to visit my grandmother in Guéckédou. My father has already bought the bus tickets. »

Ousmane réfléchit, puis dit : « I don't know… Maybe I will help my uncle in his shop. »

Le professeur dit : « Don't worry, I'll open the windows. » Puis il regarde le ciel noir et ajoute : « Look at those clouds! It's going to rain a lot. »

2Je comprends

FormeConstructionExemple
Affirmativesujet + will ('ll) + base*She will help you.* / *I'll call you.*
Négativesujet + will not (won't) + base*They won't come tomorrow.*
InterrogativeWill + sujet + base ?*Will you come to the party?*
Réponse courteYes, I will. / No, I won't.

Pas de -s à la 3e personne, pas de to : ~~She wills help~~, ~~She will to help~~ sont faux.

2. Les emplois de will

On emploie will pour :

  • une décision prise au moment où l'on parle : The phone is ringing. — I'll answer it!
I think, I hope, probably, maybe) : I think Guinea will win the match. Maybe it will be sunny tomorrow.
  • une promesse : I will never forget you. I'll bring your book back tomorrow.
  • une offre ou une demande : I'll carry your bag. Will you help me, please?
  • un fait futur certain : I will be fourteen next month.

3. Le futur avec be going to : formation

Be going to se forme avec be au présent (am, is, are) + going to + base verbale.

FormeConstructionExemple
Affirmativesujet + am / is / are going to + base*We are going to travel to Labé.*
Négativesujet + am not / isn't / aren't going to + base*He isn't going to buy a car.*
InterrogativeAm / Is / Are + sujet + going to + base ?*Are you going to play tomorrow?*
Réponse courteYes, I am. / No, he isn't.

4. Les emplois de be going to

On emploie be going to pour :

  • une intention, un projet déjà décidé avant le moment où l'on parle : I'm going to study medicine. My parents are going to build a new house.
  • une prédiction fondée sur un indice présent, visible maintenant : Look at those black clouds! It's going to rain. Be careful! You're going to fall!
Will
  • Décision prise sur le moment : I'll open the door.
  • Prédiction, opinion : I think it will rain.
  • Promesse, offre : I'll help you.
  • Même forme à toutes les personnes : will + base
Be going to
  • Projet décidé avant : I'm going to visit my aunt.
  • Prédiction avec un indice visible : Look! It's going to rain.
  • Intention ferme : She is going to study medicine.
  • Be conjugué : am / is / are going to + base
Choisir entre will et be going to.

5. Les marqueurs du futur

MarqueurSens
tomorrowdemain
the day after tomorrowaprès-demain
next week / month / yearla semaine / le mois / l'année prochaine
in two days / in 2030dans deux jours / en 2030
soonbientôt
one day, in the futureun jour, dans l'avenir
tonight, this eveningce soir

Attention : après when (quand) et if (si) qui introduisent une condition ou un moment futur, l'anglais utilise le présent et non will : *When I finish my homework, I will play.* (et non ~~When I will finish~~). *If it rains, we will stay at home.*

Méthode

Pour choisir entre will et going to :

→ will.
  2. Est-ce un projet, une intention décidée avant ? → be going to.
→ going to ; si c'est une opinion (I think, maybe, probably) → will.
→ will.
  5. Je conjugue : will + base (même forme partout) ou am / is / are going to + base.

Exemple

Choose will or going to.

a) "I've decided: I ... (become) a teacher." → décision déjà prise → I'm going to become a teacher.

b) "It's hot in here. — Wait, I ... (open) the window." → décision sur le moment → I'll open the window.

c) "Look at the sky! It ... (rain)." → indice visible → It's going to rain.

d) "I think Kadiatou ... (pass) her exam." → opinion avec I think → Kadiatou will pass her exam.

Exemple

Transform: "Sékou is going to visit Kindia next week."

Negative: Sékou isn't going to visit Kindia next week.

Question: Is Sékou going to visit Kindia next week? — Yes, he is.

With will: Sékou will visit Kindia next week. → Sékou won't visit Kindia next week. → Will Sékou visit Kindia next week? — Yes, he will.

Je retiens

Will + base (même forme à toutes les personnes) ; won't + base ; Will + sujet + base ?

Will : décision sur le moment, prédiction ou opinion (I think…), promesse, offre, demande.

Be going to : am / is / are going to + base ; isn't / aren't going to ; Is / Are + sujet + going to + base ?

Marqueurs : tomorrow, next week, in two days, soon, tonight, one day.

Après when et if, on met le présent : When I finish, I will call you.

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Ajouter to ou -s après will : « She will help », pas « She will to help » ni « She wills help ».
  • Oublier be dans going to : « I am going to travel », pas « I going to travel ».
  • Utiliser will après when ou if : « If it rains, we will stay », pas « If it will rain ».
  • Utiliser will pour un projet déjà organisé : « We are going to visit our aunt next week (tickets bought) » est plus juste que « We will visit ».
