Comparatives and superlatives (comparatifs et superlatifs)

  • Connaître les formes irrégulières (good, bad, far)
  • Exprimer l'égalité et l'infériorité (as … as, not as … as, less … than)

*« This cloth is beautiful, but that one is more beautiful. The blue cloth is cheaper than the red one. And the green one… it's the most expensive of all! »*

Plus tard, en classe, Fanta veut écrire : « Kankan is more big than Kindia.

2Je comprends

1. Adjectif court ou adjectif long ?

On appelle adjectif court :

  • un adjectif d'une syllabe : tall, big, cheap, hot, old, fast ;

2. Le comparatif de supériorité (plus … que)

  • Adjectif court : adjectif + -er + than : *Kadiatou is taller than her sister.*
  • Adjectif long : more + adjectif + than : *This book is more interesting than that one.*

3. Le superlatif (le plus …)

  • Adjectif court : the + adjectif + -est : *Mamadou is the tallest boy in the class.*
  • Adjectif long : the most + adjectif : *It is the most beautiful town in the region.*

On utilise souvent in + lieu ou groupe (in Guinea, in the class, in the family) ou of + nombre ou période (of the three, of all, of the year) après le superlatif.

  • *Mount Nimba is the highest mountain in Guinea.*
  • *Conakry is the largest city in Guinea.*

4. L'orthographe des adjectifs courts

CasRègleComparatifSuperlatif
Cas général+ er / + esttall → tallerthe tallest
Terminé par -e+ r / + stlarge → larger, nice → nicerthe largest, the nicest
Consonne + -yy → ier / iesthappy → happier, easy → easierthe happiest, the easiest
Consonne + voyelle + consonneon double la consonnebig → bigger, hot → hotter, thin → thinnerthe biggest, the hottest

5. Les comparatifs et superlatifs irréguliers

Trois adjectifs très courants sont irréguliers. Ils s'apprennent par cœur :

AdjectifComparatifSuperlatif
good (bon)better (meilleur)the best (le meilleur)
bad (mauvais)worse (pire)the worst (le pire)
far (loin)farther / further (plus loin)the farthest / the furthest

Les quantités aussi : much / many → more → the most ; little → less → the least.

  1. 1Je compte les syllabes de l'adjectif.
  2. 2Court (1 syllabe ou 2 syllabes en -y) : adjectif + er than / the + adjectif + est.
  3. 3Long (2 syllabes ou plus) : more + adjectif + than / the most + adjectif.
  4. 4J'applique l'orthographe : larger, happier, bigger.
  5. 5Je vérifie les irréguliers : good, better, the best ; bad, worse, the worst ; far, farther, the farthest.

6. L'égalité et l'infériorité

  • Égalité : as + adjectif + as (aussi … que) : *Hawa is as tall as Fanta.*
  • Négation de l'égalité : not as + adjectif + as (pas aussi … que) : *Kindia is not as big as Conakry.*
This exercise is less difficult than the last one.*
  • Superlatif d'infériorité : the least + adjectif (le moins …) : *It's the least expensive phone in the shop.*

On préfère souvent not as … as avec les adjectifs courts : *Sékou is not as old as Alpha* sonne plus naturel que less old than.

Méthode

Pour comparer dans un exercice :

  1. Je repère le type de comparaison : plus (than), le plus (the … in / of), aussi (as … as), moins (less, not as … as).
  2. Je classe l'adjectif : court ou long ? irrégulier ?
  4. Je n'oublie pas than après un comparatif et the devant un superlatif.
  5. Je relis : jamais « more bigger » ni « the most tallest » (une seule marque de comparaison).

Exemple

Compare, using the adjectives in brackets.

a) A lorry / a car (heavy) → heavy : 2 syllabes en -y → heavier. → A lorry is heavier than a car.

b) Maths / English (difficult) → adjectif long → more difficult. → For me, Maths is more difficult than English.

c) This mango / that mango (good) → irrégulier → better. → This mango is better than that mango.

d) July / January in Conakry (wet) → wet : consonne + voyelle + consonne → wetter. → In Conakry, July is wetter than January.

Exemple

Superlatives: complete the sentences.

a) Alpha is (young) child in the family. → the youngest → Alpha is the youngest child in the family.

b) This is (expensive) cloth in the shop. → adjectif long → the most expensive.

c) That was (bad) day of my life. → irrégulier → the worst day of my life.

d) Kadiatou is (happy) girl in the class. → y → iest → the happiest girl in the class.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Adjectif court (1 syllabe ou 2 en -y) : -er than / the -est (tall, taller, the tallest).

Adjectif long : more … than / the most … (more expensive, the most expensive).

Orthographe : larger ; happier, the happiest ; bigger, the biggest.

Irréguliers : good – better – the best ; bad – worse – the worst ; far – farther – the farthest.

Égalité : as … as ; négation : not as … as ; infériorité : less … than, the least.

Après un superlatif : in + lieu (in Guinea), of + groupe (of the three).

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Mettre deux marques de comparaison : « bigger », pas « more bigger » ; « the most beautiful », pas « the most beautifulest ».
  • Utiliser more avec un adjectif court : « Kankan is bigger than Kindia », pas « more big ».
  • Oublier than ou le remplacer par that : « taller than », pas « taller that ».
  • Dire « gooder » ou « the goodest » : good devient better et the best.
