Countable and uncountable nouns: some, any, much, many (dénombrables et indénombrables)

Je sais distinguer les noms dénombrables des indénombrables et employer correctement a / an, some, any, much, many, a lot of, a few et a little.

  • 50 min

  • Employer much, many et a lot of, et poser les questions How much ? et How many ?
  • Utiliser a few, a little et les mots de mesure (a bag of, a bottle of)

Avant de commencer : Le pluriel des noms, there is / there are (leçon 1), les questions avec do / does (leçon 3).

« Buy some rice, some oil, some onions and two tomatoes. We don't have any salt. Ask how much the meat costs. »

Pourquoi dit-on two tomatoes mais jamais two rices ?

a banana, bananasrice, sugar, salt, flour
an onion, onionswater, milk, oil, tea
a chair, chairsbread, meat, fish (la chair)
a coin, coinsmoney
a job, jobswork, homework
a suggestion, suggestionsadvice (conseils), information, news

On dit some advice (des conseils), *the news is good* (les nouvelles sont bonnes).

2. Some et any

Affirmativesome*There are some eggs. I want some water.*
Négativeany*There aren't any eggs. I don't have any money.*
Interrogativeany*Are there any eggs? Do you have any money?*
Offre ou demande poliesome*Would you like some tea? Can I have some bread?*

Avec un dénombrable singulier, on utilise a / an : *There is an orange on the table.*

3. Much, many, a lot of

Pour parler d'une grande quantité :

  • many + dénombrable pluriel : many pupils, many cars ;
  • much + indénombrable : much money, much time ;
  • a lot of (ou lots of) + les deux : a lot of pupils, a lot of money.

Much et many s'utilisent surtout dans les phrases négatives et interrogatives : *We don't have much time. Are there many people?* Dans les phrases affirmatives, on préfère a lot of : *There is a lot of rain in Conakry in August.*

4. How much ? How many ?

Pour demander une quantité :

  • How many + dénombrable pluriel : *How many brothers do you have? — I have three.*
  • How much + indénombrable : *How much sugar do you need? — Two kilos.*
  • How much sert aussi à demander un prix : *How much is this shirt? — It's 50,000 francs.*

5. A few, a little, few, little

Pour une petite quantité :

  • a few + dénombrable pluriel (quelques) : *I have a few friends in Labé.*
  • a little + indénombrable (un peu de) : *Add a little salt.*

Sans a, le sens devient négatif (peu de, pas assez) : *He has few friends. There is little water in the well.*

Dénombrables (pluriel)
  • a / an + singulier : an egg
  • some / any eggs
  • many eggs
  • a lot of eggs
  • a few eggs
  • How many eggs?
Indénombrables
  • jamais a / an : rice (pas « a rice »)
  • some / any water
  • much water
  • a lot of water
  • a little water
  • How much water?

  • *a bag of rice, a kilo of meat, a litre of oil, a bottle of water, a cup of tea, a loaf of bread, a piece of advice, a piece of information, a bar of soap, a tin of tomato paste*.

Le mot de mesure, lui, se met au pluriel : two bags of rice, three bottles of water (jamais ~~two rices~~).

Méthode

Pour choisir le bon mot de quantité :

? Oui → dénombrable ; non → indénombrable.
  2. Dénombrable singulier → a / an. Dénombrable pluriel → some / any, many, a few, How many.
  3. Indénombrable → some / any, much, a little, How much, jamais a / an ni -s.
  4. Je regarde la phrase : affirmative → some, a lot of ; négative ou question → any, much, many.
  5. Pour compter un indénombrable → un mot de mesure : a bag of, a bottle of, a piece of.

Exemple

Complete with some, any, much or many.

a) There is ... rice in the bag. → affirmative + indénombrable → some.

b) We don't have ... onions. → négative → any.

c) How ... tomatoes do you want? → tomatoes est dénombrable → many.

d) I don't have ... money. → négative + indénombrable → much (ou any).

Answers: some, any, many, much.

Exemple

Mariama's shopping list: correct the mistakes.

"I need a rice, two breads and some informations."

rice est indénombrable → some rice ou a bag of rice.

bread est indénombrable → two loaves of bread.

information est indénombrable → some information.

Correct: I need a bag of rice, two loaves of bread and some information.

3Je retiens

Je retiens

Dénombrable : se compte, a / an, pluriel en -s (an egg, two eggs).

some : phrase affirmative, offre ; any : phrase négative et question.

many + pluriel ; much + indénombrable ; a lot of + les deux (surtout en affirmative).

How many + pluriel ? How much + indénombrable ? How much is it ? (prix)

a few + pluriel (quelques) ; a little + indénombrable (un peu de).

Mots de mesure : a bag of rice, a bottle of water, a piece of advice.

4Erreurs fréquentes

  • Mettre a ou -s à un indénombrable : « some advice », « some information », pas « an advice » ni « informations ».
  • Utiliser some dans une phrase négative : « I don't have any money », pas « I don't have some money ».
  • Confondre much et many : « many people », « much money », pas « much people » ni « many money ».
  • Confondre How much et How many : « How many brothers? » (on les compte), « How much sugar? » (on ne le compte pas).
